After several years of postdocs and research scientist positions in the USA I am back at the institution where I did my PhD research, but this time in a tenure track position.

For the first two weeks at the Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research (NIOZ) my research field shifted as well. I co-supervised the Marine Masters (MaMa) summer course at NIOZ. The topics in this course focused on everything associated with the estuarine circulation and ecosystems. Therefore we were able to do  fieldwork in sight of the NIOZ buildings. Nevertheless, the fieldwork itself consisted of the usual fare; CTDs, water samples and moorings.

The students had various backgrounds and were all very motivated. Matlab and powerpoint were kept busy until the late evening hours. The final presentations on Friday showed that our backyard is quite a complex and interesting region. Nevertheless, the coming months I’ll be focusing on the Subpolar North Atlantic Ocean again. Next year there will be a next episode of the MaMa course.
